1. Project Background

 

A newly built bulk carrier is equipped with multiple conveyor systems and elevated access platforms. To ensure long-term safety and reduce future maintenance requirements, the shipyard decided to use molded FRP gratings instead of traditional steel gratings for several walkways and service platforms. The selected areas include conveyor maintenance platforms, inspection walkways and local working decks around key equipment.

 

 

2. On-Site Measurement and Coordination

 

Although this is a newbuild vessel, the actual dimensions of the steel structures on board differ slightly from the original drawings due to fabrication tolerances and local modifications. To avoid extensive cutting and adjustment during installation, the Drayson engineering team boarded the vessel to carry out detailed field measurements.

Key activities included:
- Measuring clear widths and support spacing of the steel frames along the conveyor lines.
- Checking the position of stair stringers, handrail posts and pipe penetrations that interact with the grating layout.
- Marking installation reference lines and confirming the locations for fixing clips and edge restraints.

 

3. FRP Grating Solution

 

The project uses molded FRP grating panels with 38×38 mm mesh and 38 mm thickness, manufactured from a corrosion-resistant resin system reinforced with E-glass. The gratings provide a non-conductive, corrosion-free alternative to steel while offering sufficient load capacity for shipboard pedestrian traffic.

Based on the measured spans and design loads, panel sizes were optimised to minimise joints and offcuts. All panels were cut according to the confirmed cutting list before being delivered to the shipyard.

 

4. Installation Support On Board

 

During the installation phase, Drayson technicians worked together with the shipyard construction team on board. Our engineers provided guidance on panel layout, fixing sequence and the correct use of stainless-steel clips and brackets. Attention was paid to maintaining uniform bearing on all supports and to aligning the finished walking surface with adjacent structures such as stairs and handrails.

Through this coordinated approach, the gratings were installed efficiently and safely, with minimal need for modification in the field.

The use of molded FRP grating on this newbuild vessel brings several long-term benefits:
- Excellent corrosion resistance in the marine environment, reducing the risk of rust and section loss.
- Lower weight compared with steel gratings, which contributes to overall weight control.
- Non-conductive and low thermal conductivity, improving safety for personnel.
- Minimal maintenance over the service life, with no need for repainting or frequent replacement.

This project demonstrates how properly engineered FRP grating solutions can be integrated into newbuild ship designs to improve safety, reduce lifecycle costs and simplify future maintenance.
